A Race Like No Other

[by Jimmy S - amateur runner and inline 'speed' skater - who's always looking for more speed]

Team RWS took part in the race too!
The first Sunday on December has become synonymous with the day for runners to meet and run. This year's inaugural Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) on Dec 5, 2010 - previously known as Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon - is one such Sunday.

However, this time round, change is in the air - the race format is slightly different. After capping out at 50,000 runners last year, the organisers realised that they'll need to re-strategise if they intend to increase the max number of participants. And increase they did - to 60,000 this year - with all three categories: 10km, 21km and the marathon 42.195km, starting at three different locations.

I signed up for the 21km and was really excited for the race - because for the first time ever, it runs through Sentosa and Universal Studios Singapore! That was until I was floored with a sprained ankle 3 weeks before the race.

The Sun set down late last Saturday.....

Fluorescent light sticks. Enthusiastic sing-alongs. Jumping, screaming fans. If you guessed a concert, you wouldn't be far off. But unlike other concerts, there's a slight catch - this one happened in Universal Studios Singapore.

Sundown Festival 2010 returned with roaring success this year, bringing the freshest and coolest music and entertainment acts from South Korea and Japan onto the Streets of New York in Universal Studios Singapore. Enthusiasts were treated to one big Asian fashion and music extravaganza.

If you were not lucky enough to take part in this event, fret not. We have here a quick eyewitness account of what happened that night, thanks in part to our intern (Siying) who shed bucket-loads of perspiration helping out during the event last Saturday.

"It wasn't a typical Saturday, this 31st of July. Instead of the usual crowd waiting to enter the park for Hollywood After Hours, there were hordes of excited fans getting ready to groove and scream their evening away to their favorite K-pop & J-rock idols.

Right after the sun set, the festival rushed off to a great start with a fantastic performance by famed Japanese traditional drumming crew, Tenko. Tenko started off as a family Taiko group, but has now grown into an interest group with members from different nationalities and races.
Tenko (Drumming)

Before the crowd settled down from the opening act, it's time to Rock ‘N’ Roll with SuG, a Heavy Positive Rock band and also a rock visual kei group from Japan as they rock the stage with high-energy performance. They were dressed in bright colours, had elaborate hairstyles, and their music can be described as full of life and rock-to-the-top. These are what makes them so attractive!
SuG (J-Rock)
"C'mon! Put your hands up! Put your hands up!"

"Get get getting jiggy, getting jiggy" with F.cuz as they thrilled fans with titillating dance and catchy melodies.
Aww...Sweet charming boys....Oppa! Sarang-haeyo!!!"

Ah! And look who we’ve got here on stage! It’s the sexiest and hottest divas from South Korea – After School. Because of you (passionate fans), After School made their debut stage performance at Universal Studios Singapore and wowed the fans with their catchy upbeat music hits and sexy dance moves. After School definitely left a Bang! on the stage of Sundown Festival 2010.
Steaming hot and sexy girl band from South Korea – After School
Reads: “Jung Ah (a member of After School)! Will you marry me?”
Birthday surprise for Lizzy – maknae (youngest member) of the girl band

For the finale act, new age Japanese rock band, LM.C brought the house down totally! Everyone was spellbound by their impactful Electro-rock (electronic and rock pop) music and colourful visuals. It was also the band’s very first time to stage a performance in South East Asia.

maya, LM.C's vocalist

Aiji, wicked on guitar

It was a really awesome concert! I can’t wait for next year’s Sundown Festival and hope that there will be new elements to spice up this one-of-its-kind Asian music festival." - Siying

Hmm….what about next year? Will groups lik 2PM, So Nyuh Shi Dae (aka Girls’ Generation), Big Bang be performing at the Sundown Festival next year? Well, you just have to keep a lookout for Sundown Festival 2011! So until next year, rock on.

August After Hours at Universal Studios Singapore

It's ACTION month this August.

If you still haven't heard, Universal Studios Singapore welcomes you to soak in the beautiful evening view along Hollywood Boulevard.

Enjoy After Hours, every Friday and Saturday from 7pm till 10pm for S$5. Don't throw away your admission stub! Show it at Hollywood China Bistro, KT's Grill, Palio, Fiesta, OSIA and Starz Restaurant for 15% discount off the total bill.

But as Shrek loved to say, "Cut to the chase!", so we will.

There's plenty of ACTION in the movies shown this month. Movie Nights are featuring some great blockbusters - watch power-armoured superheroes (and supervillains) slough it out. Or if you prefer conspiracies, there's the good ol' adventure blast-from-the-past or the modern day thriller.

And remember to cap your night out spectacularly (literally!) by catching Lake Hollywood Spectacular at 10pm. But please bear in mind that Hollywood After Hours is not available this Saturday, 31 July, because of Sundown Festival.

Here are the movies screening in August, only at Pantages Hollywood Theater:

6 and 7 August: Iron Man

CIO of Weapon Company Stark Industries, Engineering genius and Playboy Tony Stark was injured and kidnapped in Afghanistan while demonstrating a new missile to potential buyers. Forced by his captors to forge a missile, Stark plans for his escape by creating an armoured suit and a contraption to sustain his life.

Back in the States, Stark announces his plans to cease his weaponry business and starts work on an updated armoured suit, only to find out that his trusted second-in-command has betrayed him by selling Stark weapons to the insurgents, forcing Stark to use his suit as a deadly weapon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

13 and 14 August: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

It’s 1957, and the Soviets have their eye on Professor Henry Jones, more widely known as Indiana Jones to fans. They abducted Jones’ old colleague, Henry Oxley, who, before his capture, entrusted a youngster by the name of Mutt Williams to pass a coded message to Jones. With this code, the pair travelled to Peru to hunt down the legendary skill made from a single piece of quartz.

Enter the Russians, led by psychic Colonel Irina Spalko, who made an attempt at snatching the skull away from Jones before he can deliver it to its rightful place. Fallen into the wrong hands, the skulls powers would be very dangerous. Could the aging professor and the young buck save the world from peril?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

20 and 21 August: G. I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra

Two soldiers, Duke and “Ripcord”, were attacked while transporting a special weapon for a corporation named “MARS” in Kazahkstan. Things were made more complicated when the attack force was led by one Anastasia DeCobray, once romantically linked with Duke.

The pair was saved by a top secret Special Forces unit known only as G.I Joe, and decides to join the Joes in their trail to hunt down the mastermind of an evil organization known as “Cobra”. In their investigation, the Joes found out that “MARS” owner McCullen is not what he seems to be when they discovered one of McCullen’s projects, the deadly “Nanomite” warhead, which eats up any metallic products once activated. The Joes must uncover the mastermind behind this warhead before the world is destroyed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

28 and 29 August: The Bourne Ultimatum

In the 3rd and final Bourne instalment, Jason Bourne is forced out of his hiding, by unwitting London-based reporter Simon Ross, who’s digging into the covert Operation Blackbriar, the successor of Project Treadstone, in a series of newspaper columns.

Bourne decides to meet and save Ross from The Company’s clutches, but ultimately fails. From this experience, Bourne decides to once and for all, uncover his dark past while at the same time, avoid capture by The Company.

July updates for Universal Studios Singapore

[Updated: 8 July 2010]

July's coming and there's something brewing in Universal Studios (as always!). Out of the magic cauldron (with Fairy Godmother's blessing) we bring you July's Hollywood After Hours.

With the June school holidays coming to a close, After Hours will be back to Fridays and Saturdays, but still from 7pm to 10pm. The admission fee is now S$5 to enter.

WAIT A MINUTE, S$5?! It was only S$2 previously.

Well, that's right. Guests who purchase the Hollywood after Hour tickets($5) can get a 15% discount off the total bill at these outlets: Hollywood China Bistro, KT’s Grill, Palio, Fiesta, Osia, Starz Restaurant.

And you see, there's also something special about Hollywood After Hours from July onwards, and that's the much-awaited Lake Hollywood Spectacular. It's a synchronised pyrotechnic display that dances across the night accompanied by music. Here's a sneak peek into what you can expect:

Pretty isn't it? Now there, hold your horses. It starts in July, at10pm. But that's not all. For a while there, we left everyone hanging whether movie nights will still happen in July. Truth is folks , we’ve been hard at work digging up awesome movies that you would enjoy. And here's what we found for July's treasure trove of movies:

2 and 3 July: Shark Tale
Oscar is a fast-talking little fish whose big dreams have a habit of landing him in hot water, while Lenny is a great white shark with a sensitive side, and a secret- he’s a vegetarian.

When a great white lie turns Oscar into an improbably hero and the truth about Lenny makes him an outcast, these two become the most unlikely of friends.

Watch the movie to find out what trouble the dubious duo got into, and how they got out.

------------------------------------------------------------

9 and 10 July: Hotel for Dogs
Hotel for Dogs is a comedy adventure that shows how far love and imagination can take you. When 16-year-old Andi and her younger brother, Bruce, find themselves in a foster home with a strict “no pets” policy, Andy has to use her quick wit to help find a new home for their dog, Friday.

The kids stumble upon an abandoned hotel and begin transforming it into the perfect home for Friday- as well as all the strays in the city. In no time, the kids have transformed the old hotel into something truly magical: a home for both the dogs and for themselves. But they have also aroused the suspicions of the police who want to know- who let the dogs in?

------------------------------------------------------------

16 and 17 July: The Spiderwick Chronicles
It’s THE fantasy adventure for the child in all of us. Peculiar things start to happen the moment the Grace family (Jared, his twin brother Simon, sister Mallroy and their mom) leave New York and move into the secluded old house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick.

Unable to explain the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, the family blames Jared. When he, Simon and Mallroy investigate what’s really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and of the creatures that inhabit it.

------------------------------------------------------------

23 and 24 July: Mr Bean's Holiday
After entering a church raffle, Mr. Bean won a holiday to Cannes, and a camcorder.

Armed with both, he boarded the Eurostar train and in traditional Mr. Bean style, he gets into all sorts of mischief and yet somehow manages to reached his holiday destination.

------------------------------------------------------------

So, see you in the park in July

Can you handle it?

The auditions, that is. Today’s the first day of Universal Studios Singapore Audition 2010! The audition leg kicks off in Singapore and the Audition team would soon be touring the region to hunt down talented singers, dancers, stilt walkers, celebrity look-a-likes, puppeteers, voice impersonators and more.

From the Sci Fi City stiltwalkers, characters like Frankenstein and Marilyn Monroe, right down to the adorable quartet of Madagascar penguins, our park performers have only one aim- to offer visitors a memorable experience.

And that ain’t an easy job, which is why we take these auditions very seriously.
If you’re wondering what goes on at the auditions, we took a peek into today’s auditions for dancers and give you a step by step look.

STEP 1: Get registered

Fill in your particulars

Well, this is pretty basic. List down all your experiences, and talents, so that the judges have a better idea of who you are and what you can do. It’s the best time to brag about your talents.

STEP 2: Say Cheese!

Flash your million-dollar smile here

With over 300 (and counting) participants, it’s really hard to keep track who’s who. With a headshot, it’s much easier for our judges to recall the participants, just like how they do it on American Idol.

STEP 3: The Weigh-In

Getting the right height and weight

A tip: when filling up your registration form, remember not to lie about your weight, because there is a weighing-in procedure. This is for certain performer roles, where height and weight needed to be factored in.

STEP 4: The auditions begin!

Doing the funky chicken...
Our choreographer, Jason Ramsburg, will teach participants a dance routine, and we gotta say, it’s a pretty intensive dance workout.

STEP 5: The elimination...

Waiting to learn of their "fate"
After the hectic routine that Jason puts the dancers through, the participants are put into a room, and just like on American Idol, they would be called one by one and be told if they're through to the next round.

Well there you go,  it's not so terrifying, is it?

For those who have not gone for many auditions, we picked up some useful tips for you guys who are thinking of trying out the dance auditions in other cities.(Learn about the other audition cities here: www.rwsentosa.com/auditions)

Audition tips 101:

  • Bring water, lots of it:
A dance audition is a very dehydrating process, because you’d be sweating a lot.  A LOT. So to avoid tiring easily, we recommend taking in loads of fluid to keep from fainting.
  • Dress appropriately:
You’d be expected to dance your heart out, so dress light and right, so you can move freely and to avoid any wardrobe malfunction.
  • Have a towel handy:
Did we mention you’d be sweating buckets? It’s always good to have a towel handy. You wouldn’t want to be constantly dripping, would you?
And lastly, here’s some great advice from our Creative Director/ choreographer, Jason Ramsburg (he’s the one in the hat): "I don’t expect you to memorise the steps perfectly but I want you to perform".

"You gotta feel the music!"

If you think you're up for it, check out our auditions page to find out more! (www.rwsentosa.com/auditions)

See you at the auditions!

Update on Battlestar Galactica Attraction

Universal Studios Singapore is in the process of a complete ride inspection and review. An investigative team from the coaster's design, engineering and manufacturing company and some expert independent assessors are looking into the ride. The vehicle has been dismantled and its components have been sent for analysis, including an x-ray of its parts.

The whole process may take some time and we will provide an update as soon as the results are out. Meanwhile, the Battlestar Galactica attraction will remain closed. We understand some guests (and definitely fans) may be disappointed. However, we need to ensure all inspections, repairs and testing are complete before the ride resumes operations. The safety of our guests and employees remain our top priority. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.

There are still plenty of other attractions in Universal Studios that will keep your day in the park fully occupied.

These can be collected at the Guest Services Counter during first entry to the park. These vouchers are good for the day, can be combined, require no minimum purchase and valid for items in USS.

    Day Passes
*One Day Passes are valid for the day of the visit only.
*Two Days passes can be purchased from March 10 but they can only be bought beginning April 5, 2010. They apply for any two consecutive days. Upgrades from one day to two days can be done before guests leave the park; kindly approach our Guest Services Counter from April 5 onwards.

    Annual Passes
At point of purchase of the annual passes, guests will need to indicate date of first visit. The S$15 dining and shopping vouchers are separate from and are given on top of the RWS Gift Vouchers from the annual passes benefits. Guests will need to approach our Annual Passes Processing counters, just after entry, to finalise the processing of the annual passes on their first visit.

*For Guests who purchase their Fun Pass during the soft opening period (March 18 till April 1), they will be given the opportunity to visit the park ONE (1) time prior to April 5, at which time their annual membership will begin on April 5. Fun Passes after April 5 will activate based on the date of first visit.

*Superstar Passes can be activated from March 18, 2010 depending on the indicated first day of visit. Guests can use this pass to access the express queues once per attraction per day.

    Universal Express Passes
Express passes cannot be used for admission to the park; guests use them to access the express queues to bypass the normal queue lines. Same day purchase for Universal Express Passes are okay; as the park may not be crowded at all times, we highly encourage guests to only get them if necessary after they have arrived at the park.
