Because Mixed Martial Arts is a relatively new concept in Singapore, here is an introduction to Resorts World Sentosa Martial Combat - Asia's Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts Fighting Championship.
Singapore has been building up credentials to be the ultimate sporting city. Having hosted the world's first Formula 1 night race, LPGA's HSBC Women's Championship, and the upcoming Youth Olympic Games, we now have the largest and most prestigious Mixed Martial Arts championship in the region.
RWS Martial Combat is set to be Asia's answer to the widely popular US-based Ultimate Fighting Championship. Partnering with ESPN STAR Sports (ESS), the series will receive over 200hours broadcast to over 300million viewers in 24 countries across Asia. The championship features twelve events comprising 60 action-packed fights, from May to October 2010. First fights start 12 & 13 May 2010.
In this event, there will be a showcase of fighters from different disciplines (including muay thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing and wrestling).
For the first fights on 12 May, we will have Ole "Iron Fist" Laursen (above left) [former World Kickboxing Champion, Muay Thai Kings World Cup Champion and one of the most respected fighters in Asia] fighting against Eduardo "The EduCator" Pachu [Brazilian sensation]
And on 13 May, look out for Mitch "The Dragon" Chilson (above right) [Singapore's very own MMA sensation, 16 international wins and a reputation as a talented fight tactician] fighting against Zhang Jing Xong [Taiwanese undisputed and reigning three-year Sanda Champion since 2008]
Besides bringing in some of the most popular and celebrated Asian fighters and many ranked fighters from around the world, there will also be a custom designed cage taking centrestage - the first of its kind in Singapore. The Martial Combat Cage (below) has been specially reinforced to manage the sheer force and power of the fights.
