Now we know what these turrets are for

IT'S HARD to keep a secret, as anyone who has been driving into Sentosa can see these turrets peeking out of the Resorts World Sentosa/ Universal Studios Singapore site.

(Photo: Courtesy of Kenneth Goh. Click here for source)

What you see here are the turrets atop the Far Far Away Castle from the world of Shrek, and which have been greeting visitors to the Sentosa Island as they commute in.

As mentioned in an earlier post, the Far Far Away Castle from the world of Shrek is a world's first, together with the Madagascar theme park attraction, which is also one of its kind in the world.

We are always happy to see excited fans like Kenneth, as well as Greg Semon, who regularly come down to Sentosa Island to take pictures of the resort's construction.

This picture of a roller coaster carriage, for instance, was snapped by Kenneth, who spotted it near the Battlestar Galatica, which is also the world's tallest dueling coaster.

The intrepid photographer had taken this shot from outside of the barricaded compound and posted it on our Facebook Fan Page.

Hence, we invite you to share your pictures of our progress with us.

Personally, we are glad to be part of history in changing the Singapore landscape, and this is why we hope you can share your memories of our development with the rest of the world as well.

Just log in here and join in our conversation. :) See you there!

Daniel Blumberg – Costumer Extraordinaire. A Career Designed To Fit

[Written by Grace K from Entertainment]

Daniel in the 2008 Macy’s Parade in New York City.

It was a hot and humid July and we were scrambling to meet deadlines to hold a press conference for the Universal Studios Audition Tour. We were looking to recruit the very best talent in Asia for all entertainment aspects of the theme park and wanted to get the word out in a big way.

To impress the media, we planned an elaborate song and dance number that involved fictional characters ranging from Shrek to Charlie Chaplin.

As the costumes weren’t ready locally, the team had decided to rent similar ones from Universal Studios Orlando.

Rental of the costumes was expensive as the costumes were bulky and heavy incurring high air freight charges. What’s more, the costume rental came with a strict condition – we needed to also hire their costumer which meant additional fees, flights, accommodation and per diems to pay – a hefty sum for a 50 person press event.

Practical Me thought: how hard could it be to wear a costume? Put your left arm in left sleeve; right foot in right leg. This is such a waste of money. Or so I thought.

What I had forgotten at the time was that you only get one chance to leave a big impression and that making a bad impression is 100 times more damaging and memorable than a good one. As a publicist friend once told me, always put your best foot forward, otherwise you might as well stay home in slippers.

At the dress rehearsal two days before the event, we were all anxious and excited to see how everything came together. That’s when I met Daniel Blumberg, an outwardly flamboyant American with short brown hair with a charming smile and remarkable self-assurance.

“Hi, I’m Daniel. You must be Grace. I’ve heard so much about you. Come over here, let me show you what we have to do. We’re going to have such a blast.”

Even though I was only able to eek out a small hello in reply, I was already having fun.

Assisting Daniel with wardrobe, I was mesmerized by the way he worked his costume magic. The actors and actresses were in and out in a flash. Some costumes had dozens of working parts: belts, wigs, shoes, shirt, necklaces, earrings etc but Daniel knew the exact location and order of every piece. He directed the make-up and the finishing touches. Blood red lipstick for the female mummy; Max Factor Ruby Red for Marilyn Monroe. And before you knew it, the grounds were full of TV characters come to life. A 6 foot Shrek was chatting up a curvaceous Marilyn Monroe while Dracula was trying to stay hydrated sucking bottled water through a straw.

In between, Curious Me had the chance to probe into his past to discover how he came into the trade.

Apparently, his childhood dream was to become a TV Soap Star as he had spent his entire childhood devouring the trashy storylines of TV soaps such as All My Children and Days of Our Lives. Fast forward to Daniel as a performer at Walt Disney World (which his parents helped to open) where he drew a huge deal of inspiration from the team of Central American and Cuban seamstresses in the costume shop. In between shows he would hang around the shop for hours, as he felt their work was amazing. Eventually this fascination would lead him to discover his talent for costume design.

While wiping off the beads of sweat from the performers’ foreheads, Daniel also revealed his favourite costume of all time which was, of course, Glinda, The Good Witch in Wizard Of Oz who was wearing a classic billowy sandy-pink tulle gown with satin bodice and crystal stars and rhinestones complimented by her Enchanted Crown of Destiny and Wand of Pure Goodness. As a child, my personal preference was for Dorothy because I loved those shiny Ruby Slippers.

The event, which flew by, was a huge success as the day passed without a glitch and the team had big smiles of relief on their faces. The challenge now was to peel the costumes off the poor performers who were exhausted and dehydrated from performing in the afternoon heat. The worst victim was Alex the Lion who was wearing a thick, furry body suit and oversized head – a walking sauna. During the photo shoot, Alex began to wave at me which made me think of how professional this guy was, always in character, happily waving at imaginary children. It took me 20 seconds to interpret happy mascot waving as desperate get-me-outta-this-suit-I’m-going-to-die waving. OOPS....

As for Daniel, he’s decided to officially join the RWS team and has made Singapore his new home. I can just imagine the wild costume parties that we’re going to have.

And since Daniel and I both have a passion for nice shoes, it’s looking like the beginning of a beautiful friendship…

Says Daniel:

“Costuming for me is theatrical expression in the purest form from my personal contribution stand point. I have always loved the performing arts in all mediums and that I get to do what I love everyday and get paid for it is the highest blessing. Daily I collaborate with a wonderful group of sketchers, pattern makers and seamstresses to bring to life not only the creative team’s vision, but also to create something special that will resonate with the audience well after the curtain comes down or the film ends.”

Back to the old school

[Written by Karen C from HR]

Been pretty occupied with university recruitment talks lately.  So far, I've met some great undergrads.  One of their favourite questions is, "What can I do?"  So in return, I asked one of them, "Well, what sounds good to you?"

And his reply was, "Everything!  I just want to be part of this."

I love meeting people like that. The enthusiasm is infectious.

The RWS Management Trainee Program

Many undergrads that I spoke to were looking for management trainee programs with RWS.  However, I explained that our formal programs would only be rolled out after our opening, when we reached a more steady state of operation.

Right now, our sights are focused on opening up the resort.  We’re still on track for an early-2010 opening, which is really only a few months away!!

Part-time Jobs

Although we haven’t started our management training program yet, we encourage current students to use our part-time jobs as stepping stones in preparation for a full-time career at our IR.

Training starts prior to our opening and will be fully paid for.  To further sweeten the deal, we offer attractive part-time rates for hospitality jobs, and those that work night shifts will also be sent to their nearest bus stop after work (as close to home as you can get)!

The positions are:

1. Waiter/Waitress

2. Bellman

3. Sales Associate (Universal Studios Singapore)

4. Crew (Universal Studios Singapore)

5. Traffic Warden

Especially if you’re a first or second year student with the luxury of few years before graduation, consider these part-time jobs.  You can work in between classes, during holidays, weekends… the hours are flexible!

Try your hand at any of our numerous F&B outlets during one of your vacations, and then move to any of our six themed hotels the next.  And if you’re game, you could top it off with a Universal Studios experience.

Before you know it, you’d have created the entire IR experience for yourself!  When you’re ready to interview for your full-time position, you can tell us with confidence that you know exactly what it takes to work at our IR.

Think about this:  If we had to choose between two candidates for a full-time job, who would we pick?  The candidate with the RWS work experience?  Or the one without?

I’m all about the full-time…

You might be a December ’09 graduate or available for immediate hire, so you’d rather delve straight into a full-time job at RWS.  Completely understandable.  We’d like to highlight a couple of full-time job opportunities:

1. Croupier

2. Guest Services Ambassador (GSA)

Our croupier and GSA jobs are not easy. Croupiers need to master several different table games, be strong at mental calculations, have good finger dexterity, and be sharp and alert.  Our GSAs are involved in Casino Marketing, and need to be poised (they represent our glamourous Resorts World Casino) and have great interpersonal skills (they manage anyone from regular guests to members to VIPs).

How to Apply

If you’re interested in the part-time and full-time opportunities mentioned in this post, do apply online at www.rwsentosa.com/careers or email us at careers@rwsentosa.com, clearly indicating the position you are interested in.

If you think that you might be better suited for other full-time opportunities, then you can also visit our careers website for the full range of options.  As a side note, if your graduation date is some time next year or several years out and you’re ONLY looking for full-time opportunities, do apply with us closer to your graduation date.

Tying up the odds and ends from Aug 22/23

Btw, we're almost done short-listing and conducting all interviews from the Aug 22/23 recruitment drive.  If you know anyone who’s still waiting on us, they probably were not shortlisted for the position that they applied for.

However, we still encourage them to apply for other RWS positions that they qualify for!

That’s all for now! Talk soon!

Themed after DreamWorks Animation’s blockbuster movie Madagascar, Madagascar: A Crate Adventure will be a mega-attraction at Universal Studios Singapore when it opens in early 2010.

DreamWorks Animation attractions at Universal Studios Singapore:

1. Madagascar: A Crate Adventure: The hit DreamWorks Animation films are brought to life with state-of-the-art animated figures, digital projection, evocative sound, and moving show-action effects that create a one-of-a-kind, immersive ride experience.

Cast adrift while being transferred from the New York Zoo, our four heroes – Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria – arrive at the shores of Madagascar. Here, they meet the impulsive leader of the local lemurs, King Julien, who, between bustin’ moves on the jungle floor, asks the New Yorkers to help defeat his nemesis – the dreaded Foosa.

Aided by the technically-savvy but psychotic penguins, our heroes defeat the Foosa at the rim of a bubbling volcanic cauldron.

2. Shrek 4-D: Join Princess Fiona, Shrek and Donkey on a honeymoon adventure that picks up where the Oscar-winning movie “Shrek” left off, through an original 3-D film, complete with jumps, bumps, bounces, air blasts and water spray that bring the action to life for each guest – with an extra dimension of special effects through the miracle of Ogre Vision.

3. Donkey Live: Shrek’s fairy tale sidekick Donkey will bring the crowd to its feet in this all-new, one-of-a-kind, interactive live show experience, where guests sing along and even talk with Donkey in an intimate theatre setting. Situated along Far Far Away’s glamorous Romeo Drive, Hook’s Knight Club is the hottest nightspot in town.

4. King Julien’s Beach Party-Go-Round: King Julien, the self-appointed king of the lemurs, knows how to move it, move it, and now he spins guests round and round to the beat of high-energy dance music in this crazy carousel, sure to be a family favorite. At this festive beach scene, King Julien and the Lemurs are throwing a party for their favorite freaks from New York: Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo, and Melman the Giraffe.

5. Enchanted Airways: Guests of all ages climb aboard Donkey’s beloved Dragon for a flight over Far Far Away and beyond. At Enchanted Airways, a merry cast of fairy tale creatures – from the Three Pigs to the Big Bad Wolf, from Gingerbread Man to Pinocchio
– forms part of a magical airline in the form of a junior coaster that serves destinations throughout the World of Shrek!

6. Magic Potion Spin: As guests make their way past the bubbling vats of Fairy Godmother’s Potion Shop, they’ll encounter the fantastical heart of the factory, the Magic Potion Spin. This miniature Ferris wheel drives a clinking, clanking potion assembly line that circles the room, bottling magical elixirs from a giant wooden vat.

So bowled over

[Written by Jimmy S from Projects]

Nearing the end of the year, construction work on site is moving into overdrive. However, off-site, things are ramping up as well.

If you happened to be walking past the bowling alley in Marina Square after work on Sep 16, I hope you were not shocked by the screams emanating from the group of over 80 Universal Studios Singapore Park Ops personnel having a game or two of bowling there.

Yup, they were feisty, they were loud and they were definitely screaming themselves hoarse. And all these were part of having fun of course.

Two buses were chartered for this first team building event, organized by the FUN Committee.

The participants, mostly garbed in the bright orange tees of Universal Studios Singapore vPark Ops, descended upon the quiet Marina Square on a cool drizzly night and turned it riotous. Starting from 7pm, for two hours, they bowled, howled (probably more than they bowled!) and had a blast.

"When will his long lecture end?"

The event kicked off with some words of wisdom from John Hallenbeck, the USS Park Ops Director.

Not to be outdone, Nelson Chan (below), the event organizer, followed up with instructions on the flow of the night’s events.

Ater this, the group helped themselves to the buffet while the bowling lanes were opened for some trial throws. The event proper commenced at around 7:20pm and the screams didn’t subside until nearly two hours later.

Meanwhile the award for the team with the highest aggregate score went to team 17 comprising of Fu Shiqi, Paul Yuen, Chan Chee Wah, Huang Huimin and William Ang. They won a set of Vivocity shopping vouchers.

She bowled us over with her prowess..

The most-likely-to-improve awards went to Andrea Ng for her individual score and team 5, comprising of Joey Guo, Tan Qiuhua, Fey Cho, Joshua Nathaniel and Iffah Suhaila. They won the encouragement prizes: The Cruise to Nowhere AKA Float for Miss Andrea and Exotic Dinner AKA instant noodles for the team.

We are expecting great things from them the next time round!

Everyone gathered for a final round of photo-taking and there were, not surprisingly, more screams.

With more people coming on board as the time nears opening, future events would undoubtedly become larger in scale. And you can be sure they will definitely be ear-shatteringly loud indeed.

Who is Jimmy S?

[Written by Jimmy S from Projects]

Jimmy has been with RWS since October 2007. He joined the Projects team that is currently busy completing construction of the IR, specifically dealing with one of the attraction in the Universal Studios theme park.

The idea was to see what goes into the process of getting an attraction from the drawing boards all the way into reality.

His interest lies in a multitude of disciplines. His main and probably first long-lasting interest is in the written word. For the longest time since he could possibly remember, he loves to read: he prefers fiction but any well written (read: not dry) non-fiction works just fine.

He's currently especially interested in books on alternate history, psychology and morality. But he’s ready to pick up books from any genre: thrillers, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, adventure, romance, life, current issues, technical, self-help, magazines, reviews etcetera.

In fact if you have something to recommend, he would really love to hear the

He also likes to share his thoughts but seldom professes to have much to share. At least that’s what he thinks. And that’s also the reason he gives for his constantly un-updated blogs – yes he has a few, though he should probably consolidate them all into one. Unfortunately (or rather perhaps fortunately since he seldom updates), he is probably only rambling about inane stuff. But he digresses...

When he’s not reading, he enjoys his computer games. He used to go on a gaming spree for up to 48 hours at a go. His friends reportedly mentioned that Jimmy once slept for 36 hours at a go. He refuses to validate or deny that statement.

He loves his RPG – role-playing games. But he’s always ready to play any games, as long as they are fun, has great gameplay, good storyline, excellent user interface. He doesn’t care much about graphics, music or sound effects – as long as they are good enough to bring across the message or mood; visceral and aural stimulation is secondary to the vast worlds his imagination allows him to visit.

He prefers games on the PC – nothing beats the control the mouse and keyboard gives, especially when matched against the clumsy controllers on the consoles (sorry, he remains thoroughly unconvinced that FPS – first person shooters – are worth playing on the consoles). Unfortunately, he has less and less time nowadays to commit himself to this passion of his.

That’s because...

Jimmy’s too busy indulging in two of his most recent ‘hobbies’: in-line skating and running. He dabbled with roller blades when he was still a young ‘un. It was only in December 2007 did he buy his first pair of in-line skates, the K2 Exo Alu, and he went nuts with them.

He went skating every Saturday and Sunday; he makes time if he couldn’t find time. He was so crazy about it he even tried skating after work on Fridays. Now that didn’t work out too well; the paths were a little too dark for his liking.

His favourite haunt was, and still is, the relatively straight and flat paths along East Coast Park. Distance and speed are his mainstay workout as he’s not yet limber or agile enough to perform the tricks of aggressive skating.

He took a break from skating, literally, after a bad fall in which he fractured his left humerus in May 2008. But that didn’t deter him and he’s back to it after a near 6-months hiatus. And still loving it.

You can usually find him breezing along East Coast Park on both weekends, unless he was taking a trip or running his legs jelly in a race in some other part of Singapore; sometimes you may even find him running a race at ECP.

So what was that about running?

After his 'failed experiment' skating after work on weekdays, he wondered if he could do something else. Something like... running! You just need a pair of good shoes, some lighting, a running path relatively free from vehicular access and you can run your heart out.
He started running sometime in February 2008 after being influenced by his friend to sign up for the Sundown Marathon 2008. Now perhaps you may think he’s crazy to sign up for such an extreme distance after 20 over years of near sedentary lifestyle and you are absolutely right, he was nuts!

Little did he know the pain people put themselves through running a marathon but ‘luckily’ for him, the accident with the skates put him off any physical activities for at least 3 months. As the marathon was slated for end of May 2008, that was definitely a no go.
Not feeling grateful that he missed out on his serving of pain, he signed up again for Sundown Marathon 2009. This time he ran, he wept, he walked, he limped and he practically crawled his way past the finish line.

And not merely content with the pain he suffered (and upset with his timing) he promptly signed up for the next marathon in town – the Standard Chartered Marathon 2009, held annually on the first Sunday in December.

In between marathons, he trains 3 times a week. Recently he has been participating in a multitude of ‘shorter’ distances races aka the 10-kms and 10-milers. He’s been trying to get in more long runs in between the hectic race schedules and also having enough rest so that he does not get himself injured.

Jimmy is now looking forward to his latest project: unloading his mundane ramblings weekly. Hopefully the masses wouldn’t just disappear like the dodo bird when his mind starts wandering and his fingers start dancing.

Why I am in Resorts World Sentosa

[Written by Grace K from Entertainment]

While many people have visited casinos, resorts and theme parks, not many people ever dream of working there. Typically, you would think of them as places where you go to relax, not work. “Hey mom, it’s Princess Fiona! I wanna work here!” For me, the yellow brick career path took a few zigzags through F&B, MTV and even at the Zoo before landing me in what I consider “the perfect job” at RWS.

Before you think “Well, she works there. What else is she going to say??” Let me share a few details of what I do. I am a member of the pioneer team to develop and build the foundation of Singapore’s first Integrated Resort. Check. I work in the Entertainment Team that plans and produces all of the entertainment from music, performances, concerts, sports, festivals to signature events Resort-wide, including Universal Studios which is only one of the biggest and most exciting entertainment franchises in the world! Double check.

So love it? Definitely. Busy? We are up to our eyeballs in work. But what makes it worthwhile is the strong camaraderie and family “kampong” feel of the company which keeps our spirits high in the face of developing one of the largest scale commercial projects in Singapore’s history. On some days it feels like building the Great Wall. There are just so many facets to RWS that makes it intriguing. There will be so much to see and do for every corner of the resort to make sure visitors are thoroughly amazed, entertained, mesmerized and return home with amazing memories…that will probably be captured in a few hundred new facebook photos each day.

Aside from my own work, it is fun to see things coming together for other departments. With four years of catering experience under my belt, I profess a strange love for all things F&B. I enjoyed watching the F&B team lay out samples of crystal glassware on long tables according to the brands for evaluation – champagne, red, white, martini, rock, high ball, shot glass. Schott Zweisel for me, please. Wrapping hundreds of wine bottles in aluminium foil for blind tasting – which labels were chosen in the end? Watch this space. Hearing about the celebrity chefs, different types of cuisine and food outlets that will be brought in. Yummy. I can’t wait.

One of the perks of being a Programming Manager in the Entertainment Dept of RWS is that it’s my job to track all of the entertainment happening throughout Asia and sometimes across the US and Europe. Not only do I measure the quality of the act and if it fits with our line-up but I also track the ticket pricing as RWS is a family resort where we want everyone to have fun.

Technically, that means that I try to attend every single small to big event/exhibition/party/concert/ festival that happens in Singapore and often times in other locations in Asia. It makes for some long evenings (often assisted with some bubbly) and some even longer mornings and afternoons when my schedule is packed with back to back meetings. But hey I’m not complaining. Party Girl Grace says Work hard, play hard. It’s fun to help make history and I hope you’ll join us when we open in 2010.

A shoutout to the world from RWS' HR Team

She's young, dynamic, and is a mean matchmaker who is able to suss out the best job-seekers looking to make their mark in the Resorts World Sentosa family.

Meet Karen L, who literally has had to screen thousands of applicants together with the rest of the Human Resource Team.

And mind you, these applications come fast and furious.

So how does this sporty twenty-something babe deal with the pressures of work?

Find out in her first blog here.

Hello World!

[Written by Karen C from HR]

Hi everybody and welcome to the RWS HR blog! Through this blog, I hope that you will get to know our HR team a little better and find out what goes on behind the scenes to build up our fast-expanding RWS family.

I'm sure I've met some of you before, either when we chatted at career fairs or when I presented at recruitment talks. My main responsibility at RWS is to help in planning the resort-wide recruitment strategy, which comprises partnering organisations to bring in our talent pool all the way to the details of logistics planning for recruitment events. If you see me at future recruitment events, please feel free to ask me questions or just say hi!

I joined RWS because I wanted to be in the centre of the action and buzz of creating this Sentosa IR. So far, I have not been disappointed. Things move very fast around here so that definitely keeps me on my toes. I'm constantly challenged to come up with solutions for situations that I've never encountered before, and flexibility is my new middle name. Honestly, I never imagined that Shrek would one day be my colleague or that I'd be learning the rules of pai gow on my lunch break (all in the name of work, of course).

As many of you know by now, RWS will be opening in early 2010. By the end of the year, we plan to be 8,000-strong! In order to track down the best possible team members, we participated in several major career fairs, which include Career & Education 2009 and our June recruitment drive at Suntec.

We also recently concluded August walk-in interviews for our operational positions, which saw almost 16,000 job seekers persevering in the long lines and all sorts of tropical weather tribulations. We'd like to take this time to thank everyone that stopped by and for your very overwhelming interest to be part of RWS.

For those that didn't secure an interview during the August 22 or 23 walk-in interview sessions, we are in the process of conducting interviews and regret that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you haven't heard from us after two months, we encourage you to seek out other job opportunities either in RWS or other organisations. If you are still awaiting the results of your interviews and/or offer letters, do be patient with us. We are processing thousands of applications/offers every week and working as fast as we can!

Meantime, keep your eyes and ears peeled for available job opportunities that are constantly updated on our RWS careers page (www.rwsentosa.com/careers). Also, come join us at any of our recruitment talks that are organised through our partners and various institutions & corporations. On September 30 at 1:30pm, we will be presenting at e2i’s Integrated Resorts industry preview (www.e2i.com.sg to register and for more information). Come say hi!

See you soon.
