July updates for Universal Studios Singapore

[Updated: 8 July 2010]

July's coming and there's something brewing in Universal Studios (as always!). Out of the magic cauldron (with Fairy Godmother's blessing) we bring you July's Hollywood After Hours.

With the June school holidays coming to a close, After Hours will be back to Fridays and Saturdays, but still from 7pm to 10pm. The admission fee is now S$5 to enter.

WAIT A MINUTE, S$5?! It was only S$2 previously.

Well, that's right. Guests who purchase the Hollywood after Hour tickets($5) can get a 15% discount off the total bill at these outlets: Hollywood China Bistro, KT’s Grill, Palio, Fiesta, Osia, Starz Restaurant.

And you see, there's also something special about Hollywood After Hours from July onwards, and that's the much-awaited Lake Hollywood Spectacular. It's a synchronised pyrotechnic display that dances across the night accompanied by music. Here's a sneak peek into what you can expect:

Pretty isn't it? Now there, hold your horses. It starts in July, at10pm. But that's not all. For a while there, we left everyone hanging whether movie nights will still happen in July. Truth is folks , we’ve been hard at work digging up awesome movies that you would enjoy. And here's what we found for July's treasure trove of movies:

2 and 3 July: Shark Tale
Oscar is a fast-talking little fish whose big dreams have a habit of landing him in hot water, while Lenny is a great white shark with a sensitive side, and a secret- he’s a vegetarian.

When a great white lie turns Oscar into an improbably hero and the truth about Lenny makes him an outcast, these two become the most unlikely of friends.

Watch the movie to find out what trouble the dubious duo got into, and how they got out.

------------------------------------------------------------

9 and 10 July: Hotel for Dogs
Hotel for Dogs is a comedy adventure that shows how far love and imagination can take you. When 16-year-old Andi and her younger brother, Bruce, find themselves in a foster home with a strict “no pets” policy, Andy has to use her quick wit to help find a new home for their dog, Friday.

The kids stumble upon an abandoned hotel and begin transforming it into the perfect home for Friday- as well as all the strays in the city. In no time, the kids have transformed the old hotel into something truly magical: a home for both the dogs and for themselves. But they have also aroused the suspicions of the police who want to know- who let the dogs in?

------------------------------------------------------------

16 and 17 July: The Spiderwick Chronicles
It’s THE fantasy adventure for the child in all of us. Peculiar things start to happen the moment the Grace family (Jared, his twin brother Simon, sister Mallroy and their mom) leave New York and move into the secluded old house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick.

Unable to explain the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, the family blames Jared. When he, Simon and Mallroy investigate what’s really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and of the creatures that inhabit it.

------------------------------------------------------------

23 and 24 July: Mr Bean's Holiday
After entering a church raffle, Mr. Bean won a holiday to Cannes, and a camcorder.

Armed with both, he boarded the Eurostar train and in traditional Mr. Bean style, he gets into all sorts of mischief and yet somehow manages to reached his holiday destination.

Can you handle it?

The auditions, that is. Today’s the first day of Universal Studios Singapore Audition 2010! The audition leg kicks off in Singapore and the Audition team would soon be touring the region to hunt down talented singers, dancers, stilt walkers, celebrity look-a-likes, puppeteers, voice impersonators and more.

From the Sci Fi City stiltwalkers, characters like Frankenstein and Marilyn Monroe, right down to the adorable quartet of Madagascar penguins, our park performers have only one aim- to offer visitors a memorable experience.

And that ain’t an easy job, which is why we take these auditions very seriously.
If you’re wondering what goes on at the auditions, we took a peek into today’s auditions for dancers and give you a step by step look.

STEP 1: Get registered

Fill in your particulars

Well, this is pretty basic. List down all your experiences, and talents, so that the judges have a better idea of who you are and what you can do. It’s the best time to brag about your talents.

STEP 2: Say Cheese!

Flash your million-dollar smile here

With over 300 (and counting) participants, it’s really hard to keep track who’s who. With a headshot, it’s much easier for our judges to recall the participants, just like how they do it on American Idol.

STEP 3: The Weigh-In

Getting the right height and weight

A tip: when filling up your registration form, remember not to lie about your weight, because there is a weighing-in procedure. This is for certain performer roles, where height and weight needed to be factored in.

STEP 4: The auditions begin!

Doing the funky chicken...
Our choreographer, Jason Ramsburg, will teach participants a dance routine, and we gotta say, it’s a pretty intensive dance workout.

STEP 5: The elimination...

Waiting to learn of their "fate"
After the hectic routine that Jason puts the dancers through, the participants are put into a room, and just like on American Idol, they would be called one by one and be told if they're through to the next round.

Well there you go,  it's not so terrifying, is it?

For those who have not gone for many auditions, we picked up some useful tips for you guys who are thinking of trying out the dance auditions in other cities.(Learn about the other audition cities here: www.rwsentosa.com/auditions)

Audition tips 101:

  • Bring water, lots of it:
A dance audition is a very dehydrating process, because you’d be sweating a lot.  A LOT. So to avoid tiring easily, we recommend taking in loads of fluid to keep from fainting.
  • Dress appropriately:
You’d be expected to dance your heart out, so dress light and right, so you can move freely and to avoid any wardrobe malfunction.
  • Have a towel handy:
Did we mention you’d be sweating buckets? It’s always good to have a towel handy. You wouldn’t want to be constantly dripping, would you?
And lastly, here’s some great advice from our Creative Director/ choreographer, Jason Ramsburg (he’s the one in the hat): "I don’t expect you to memorise the steps perfectly but I want you to perform".

"You gotta feel the music!"

See you at the auditions!

Are you ready for Fight Club?

The second fight night of Asia’s Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts Championship is right around the corner. Here’s a snapshot of the four fighters taking the cage in the Fight’s highlight event- the Super Fight.

June 16, 2010

Aaron “Man of Steel” Steele (USA)
Trained in submission wrestling and kickboxing, the “Man of Steel”, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, has fought many fights in the Midwest America. And no, he didn’t get his nickname just from his name, Steele is known to withstand heavy blows and yet find strength to deliver some pretty damaging blows to his opponent.

vs

Jong Man “Special Force” Kim (South Korea)
An ex-soldier of South Korea’s Special Forces, it’s not hard to guess where Kim got his nickname from. But that doesn’t mean he hadn’t fought hard to own the moniker. An old hand at K-1 Dynamite, Japan’s annual mixed martial arts and kickboxing competition, “Special Force” is a top ranked fighter with 46 MMA fights to his name, in which he has won 21 of them.

June 17, 2010

Malik “Natural Born Killer” Mawlayi (Sweden/ Afghanistan)
With over 70 fights to his name, “Natural Born Killer” hails from war-torn Afghanistan and has trained in Taekwondo since 15 before picking up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He took part in his first MMA fight in 2005 and won, following with a string of successful submission fights. Known for his explosive nature and his skillful submission moves, we don’t envy his opponent.

vs

Cyrus (USA)
His nickname may be simple but his skills are anything but. Cyrus is a ferocious fighter and a 10-year veteran of Muay Thai, with over 50 Muay Thai fights to brag about. Keep your eyes peeled for his flying elbows and spinning leg kicks- Cyrus is a master at these two moves.

If you're a fan of Mixed Martial Arts, don't give the fight nights on 16th and 17th June a miss.Besides the quartet above, there are eight other fighters each night, so there are plenty of punches to go around.
