Why I am in Resorts World Sentosa

[Written by Grace K from Entertainment]

While many people have visited casinos, resorts and theme parks, not many people ever dream of working there. Typically, you would think of them as places where you go to relax, not work. “Hey mom, it’s Princess Fiona! I wanna work here!” For me, the yellow brick career path took a few zigzags through F&B, MTV and even at the Zoo before landing me in what I consider “the perfect job” at RWS.

Before you think “Well, she works there. What else is she going to say??” Let me share a few details of what I do. I am a member of the pioneer team to develop and build the foundation of Singapore’s first Integrated Resort. Check. I work in the Entertainment Team that plans and produces all of the entertainment from music, performances, concerts, sports, festivals to signature events Resort-wide, including Universal Studios which is only one of the biggest and most exciting entertainment franchises in the world! Double check.

So love it? Definitely. Busy? We are up to our eyeballs in work. But what makes it worthwhile is the strong camaraderie and family “kampong” feel of the company which keeps our spirits high in the face of developing one of the largest scale commercial projects in Singapore’s history. On some days it feels like building the Great Wall. There are just so many facets to RWS that makes it intriguing. There will be so much to see and do for every corner of the resort to make sure visitors are thoroughly amazed, entertained, mesmerized and return home with amazing memories…that will probably be captured in a few hundred new facebook photos each day.

Aside from my own work, it is fun to see things coming together for other departments. With four years of catering experience under my belt, I profess a strange love for all things F&B. I enjoyed watching the F&B team lay out samples of crystal glassware on long tables according to the brands for evaluation – champagne, red, white, martini, rock, high ball, shot glass. Schott Zweisel for me, please. Wrapping hundreds of wine bottles in aluminium foil for blind tasting – which labels were chosen in the end? Watch this space. Hearing about the celebrity chefs, different types of cuisine and food outlets that will be brought in. Yummy. I can’t wait.

One of the perks of being a Programming Manager in the Entertainment Dept of RWS is that it’s my job to track all of the entertainment happening throughout Asia and sometimes across the US and Europe. Not only do I measure the quality of the act and if it fits with our line-up but I also track the ticket pricing as RWS is a family resort where we want everyone to have fun.

Technically, that means that I try to attend every single small to big event/exhibition/party/concert/ festival that happens in Singapore and often times in other locations in Asia. It makes for some long evenings (often assisted with some bubbly) and some even longer mornings and afternoons when my schedule is packed with back to back meetings. But hey I’m not complaining. Party Girl Grace says Work hard, play hard. It’s fun to help make history and I hope you’ll join us when we open in 2010.
